Legendary Newport Venue TJs Sold At Auction

Newport’s legendary venue TJs, where many historical events have taken place (apparently its where Kurt Cobain proposed to Courtney Love!), has been sold to a 23 year-old Cardiffian in an auction.

Welsh music fans and gig-goers may be left disheartened after learning that Ozzeer Hassan, who paid Ł242,000 for the venue, will be turning the iconic place into a restaurant and a block flats. But Hassan insists he’ll try and qualm some of the concerns about the sale, saying “We want to preserve the TJ's image with a themed restaurant.”

TJs was put up for sale after its owner John Sicolo sadly passed away, following years of gigs and concerts, during which it became known as a staple stop on any up and coming rock band’s UK tours - I remember watching Trivium there before they became an arena-sized band. Paul Fosh had put the site up for auction with a guide value of Ł175,000, saying “There was a great deal of interest leading up to the sale of what was an iconic club in Newport.”

There were apparently a lot of bids as dozens turned out to see who’d take control of the place. Hassan’s final winning bid is said to have left Fosh pleased at the money raised from the sale.

What do you think of the sale of TJs – should it remain a venue? Or will the restaurant be a fitting end to an era for the venue? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
