Stereoboard Tour of the Week – Coldplay - Tickets Onsale 9.30am Friday

Thursday, 22 September 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, it can’t be denied that in the 11 years that have followed the release of their debut ‘Parachutes’, Coldplay have made quite an impact on the world. In fact, it’s probably fair to say that they’ve well and truly taken over. Their last two albums both entered the US Billboard 200 at Number One – a relatively rare feat for a British act – and all four have since gone multi-Platinum on that side of the pond, as well as in numerous other countries. Whether or not you think this accomplishment is warranted is another matter, but there’s little doubt that when tickets go on sale on Friday for the band’s latest UK tour, their popularity will once again be proved back at home as well.

Next month, after 7 Grammys, 6 Brits and numerous other awards, Chris Martin and the other three will be back with their fifth album ‘Mylo Xyloto’ – like you didn’t already know. After the enormously well-received offering that was ‘Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends’, anticipation is high for what will be made of Coldplay’s latest effort. Despite various rumours suggesting that the band’s previous release may have been their last, the quartet have since quashed such stories by confirming that another album was well on the way. As we’ve come to expect from Coldplay, the overall response to the songs that have appeared so far have varied greatly, so it’ll be interesting to see what the final verdict is when the album is unleashed in a few weeks time.

As their four albums to date have proved, Coldplay are the Marmite of the music world, for obvious reasons. There are probably as many people out there that wouldn’t confess to owning a Coldplay album as there are those that are more than happy to admit it. The band and their loyal fans, on the other hand, probably couldn’t care either way – as the recent reaction to their headlining performance at Glastonbury proved. This year’s Worthy Farm event boasted three of the biggest bill-toppers they have ever booked in the festival’s 41-year history, but one of the main acts stood out from the rest and, somewhat surprisingly, that band was not U2. In a year when the festival market has been accused of becoming oversaturated, with music fans being literally spoiled for choice, Coldplay were named Best Festival Headliner in a BBC poll – even beating Muse to the post.

So, when the band roll into town in December as part of their latest European tour, it’s more than likely to be a very late contender for Tour of the Year. Good luck to anyone hoping to get their hands on some tickets – here’s hoping that ‘Mylo Xyloto’ will prove to be a welcome taster for their upcoming live shows when it finally arrives next month. For those of you less interested with any of Coldplay’s plans for the rest of the year, sorry… You may want to keep your fingers in your ears for the next few months. It’s looking highly-probable that we haven’t heard the last of them just yet.
