ITV’s reality music talent show The X Factor has upset a music charity over the naming of one of the groups competing in this year’s contest. Girl group Rhythmix, a band comprising of four failed solo applicants who were then brought together by the show’s bosses, are using the same name as a South-East music charity.
Rhythmix, a music charity that started in 1999 and has helped over 45,000 youngsters through development of personal and social skills, are now seeking legal advice due to the fact that their name is being used without permission. A Rhythmix spokesperson said this week that the X Factor team had made no agreement with the charity to use its name and that the charity “had no other choice” but to pursue legal action.
X Factor representatives were eager to outline that "The charity in question have trademarked the name 'Rhythmix' for educational purposes only, which is not in conflict with the band or the show."
Mark Davyd, chief executive at the charity, said that despite this technicality he had repeatedly asked the show’s bosses to change the band’s name but to no avail.
The X Factor has had it’s share of clashes over its eight year lifespan, most notably the battle it lost with a Facebook group that opposed 2009 X Factor’s winner Joe McElderry’s bid for number one, urging music fans to buy Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Killing In the Name’ instead.
2011’s X Factor judges Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, Kelly Rowland, and Louis Walsh, formed the band of four girls after they entered unsuccessfully as solo applicants.
The new girlband consists of Jesy Nelson, 20, Perrie Edwards, 18, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 19, and Jade Thirlwall, 18.
Rhythmix will perform this Saturday, October 8th, on the first live show of The X Factor.NOTE FROM THE EDITOR We don't run any advertising!
