American thrash metal gods Slayer have sensationally announced that they’re currently in studio penning some new material.
The band, considered one of the most brutal and heaviest groups of all time, have eleven studio albums under their belt; the last being 2009’s ‘World Painted Blood’. Being one of the most prolific band’s in metal, fans are always expecting a new album and had been told by drummer Dave Lombardo that there would be a new album on the way.
When asked by Metal Hammer about a new album in May earlier this year, he replied: “Yes absolutely. Although there's nothing written but there is definitely plans. Of course. We have to! Why not?! I'm not retiring and I don't think Kerry's retiring either so...”
While the news pleased fans, frontman Tom Araya reiterated the fact that there would be NO new Slayer record until guitarist and songwriter Jeff Hanneman had made a full recovery from his flesh-eating ‘necrotizing fasciitis’ disease (possibly the most fitting condition a Slayer member could have contracted).
Araya said: “There's no way we'd go into a studio without him. As a band we're not going to do something without him... We require his musical skills, his writing skills. He's an integral part of the band. So we're going to hold off until he's at 100 percent and can join that process and be part of it.”
Now, it seems as though Hanneman must have made a recovery – as Lombardo posted through his Twitter: “SLAYER is writing a new record and PHILM [his new band] is about to start mixing their debut record. Looking forward to touring again w/ new music.”
Nothing official has been released or said by the band yet other than Lombardo’s tweet, but Stereoboard will be the first to supply you with the details of the new album when they surface. Watch this space.
