Leona Lewis Claims 'Hurt' Cover Was A "Healing" Experience

London-based X-Factor winner Leona Lewis has claimed that her cover of Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Hurt’ was a healing process for her and has helped here overcome pain of splitting with long-term boyfriend Lou Al-Chamaa.

The singer released a three-track E.P this week, featuring three covers of famous tunes, including The Goo Goo Dolls' 'Iris', Counting Crows' 'Colorblind', and, of course, NIN’s ‘Hurt’. The lyrics of the song are particularly emotional, and it features lines like ‘I hurt myself today / to see if I still feel / I focus on the pain / the only thing that's real’ – leaving some NIN fans wondering whether Lewis would do the song justice.

But today, Lewis has come forward to defend her decision to cover the track, which Johnny Cash famously covered a year before his death, saying she is ‘genuinely a big fan’ of the song.

Lewis told Radio 1’s Newsbeat: “People write music and the music is out there for people to interpret it how they want to. As long as it's coming from a genuine place. But that song in particular really speaks to me. Lyrically it's a song that is very intense and has painful lyrics. . I actually am a big fan of that song and a big fan of the Johnny Cash cover.”

She went on to talk about her the track relates to her, speaking of her break-up with Al-Chamaa. “It's reflective of a place where I was at. When I recorded it, it was healing to get it out.”
