Sir Paul McCartney Shows Distaste For Bands Using Backing Tapes

Ex-Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney has shown his disapproval for bands that use backing tracks during their live performances – then swore to never use one at one of his own shows.

McCartney was unhappy to learn that a lot of big name bands actually used pre-recorded tapes to perform over during live shows, after his friend and sound engineer Paul Pablo Boothroyd told him about some of the different way artists perform live.

McCartney declined to name-and-shame some of the artists that Boothroyd revealed as backing-track users, but we can tell you that Boothroyd has worked with an array of star bands and singers including Eurythmics, AC/DC, Marillion and John Mayall.

“We are glad at the end five of us take a bow and there is nobody hidden under the stage either which I hear some naughty people do,” Macca told the Daily Express. “Sorry, I won’t say any names. When we make mistakes playing live, we always now turn it and say, ‘Tell you what – this proves we are live'.”

There may be some opportunities arising for you to catch McCartney on the road in the near future, too, as he finishes off work on his new studio album. A track he’s completed with Eric Clapton has already been unveiled, and can be heard below.
