Paul McCartney will release a new album later this spring.
The follow-up to 2020's 'McCartney III' is called 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane' and will arrive on May 29. The title is taken from lyrics in the first single, Days We Left Behind, which you can listen to below. Introducing it on social media, the Beatles legend said:
"The album title, comes from a lyric in the track 'Days We Left Behind'. I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else?"
A description of the record on McCartney's website reads:
The Boys of Dungeon Lane is not only the 18th solo album to be released by Paul McCartney; it is a collection of rare and revealing glimpses into memories never-before shared along with some newly inspired love songs, from one of the most culturally significant figures of our time.
Across the album, Paul turns the lens inward, revisiting the formative years that shaped not only his life, but the very foundations of modern popular culture. In a career defined by timeless storytelling and unforgettable characters, Paul now tells the most personal story of all, his own. The album is his most introspective album to date, taking the listener back to where it all began. These extraordinary new songs find Paul writing with rare openness about his childhood in post-war Liverpool, the resilience of his parents, and early adventures shared with George Harrison and John Lennon long before the world had ever heard of Beatlemania.
Like his career, The Boys of Dungeon Lane is musically eclectic and sees Paul across an array of instruments and styles showcasing his broad musicality. There’s Wings style rock, Beatles style harmonies, McCartney style grooves, understated intimacy, melody driven storytelling, character songs – the common thread being Paul.
The announcement arrives ahead of the singer-songwriter's first concerts of the year at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles tomorrow and Saturday (March 27 and 28). The 83-year-old's Paul McCartney Rocks The Fonda gigs will be phone-free, with fans requested to secure them in Yondr pouches.
Following his last studio album, McCartney released the star-studded remix collection 'McCartney III Imagined' in 2021 and in 2024 he put out 'One Hand Clapping', a live in-studio album he recorded with his band Wings nearly 50 years ago. 2024 also saw him release a 50th anniversary edition of the Wings album 'Band On The Run', featuring a set of "underdubbed" mixes.
More recently, in February the feature-length documentary Man On The Run, which follows McCartney through the 1970s after the break-up of The Beatles, was released alongside 'Man on the Run - Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack'. The documentary is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
