Big Chill 2012 Cancelled

Herefordshire’s annual alternative dance and chill-out music festival Big Chill has been cancelled this year, after a number of organisation and technical difficulties meant it would be too difficult to go ahead.

The 35,000 capacity festival will not be going ahead this year, after attempts to move the timing of the festival because of the 2012 London Olympics failed, and artist bookings were hindered because of uncertainty over the dates of the event. It will return in 2013.

A statement from festival organiser Melvin Benn on the official Big Chill website read: “It is with a considerable amount of regret that I have decided not to go ahead with The Big Chill in 2012. I looked long and hard late last year at moving the date so it didn’t clash with the Olympics but the mix of the festival fans desire to keep the date and an inability to find an alternative date that works I plumped for maintaining the existing weekend.

“Sadly, the artist availability and confirmations we were achieving led me to conclude that I couldn’t risk going ahead with the event as an outdoor event this year. Efforts are being made to look to bring a smaller event indoors this year with the anticipation of Big Chill being back outdoors in 2013.”

It isn’t the only British festival which has decided to take a year off because of the Olympics, after Glastonbury Festival organiser Michael Eavis announced last summer that there would be no Glastonbury 2012.
