'People Used To Tell Me To Audition For The X-Factor', Reveals Emeli Sande

Scottish singing sensation Emeli Sandé has revealed how people constantly tried to convince her to audition for the X-Factor instead of trying to get signed on her own – and that she rejected the idea as bosses would most likely refuse to let her write her own material.

Sandé, who has already won the BRITs Critic’s Choice Award and is currently writing material for the original line-up of the Sugababes, will see her debut album released on February 12th. She is considered one of Britain’s most talented singers of the moment, and is a fast-rising star – but before she found fame, she was often persuaded to go on Simon Cowell’s world famous talent contest show.

“People used to tell me to do it because they saw getting signed as a long battle, but it was never about that,” Sandé told the Daily Star. “Having a good voice was not enough; it was about being a writer. And I didn't think I'd have got the opportunity to sing my own songs if I'd done that.

“Also it always seemed sad seeing three people on a panel crushing a young singer's dreams, so I didn't want to put myself through that. Maybe if Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone were on the panel... But even then I don't know if I'd like it. Being an artist is about feeling free to do what you want.”
