BRIT Awards And ITV Chiefs Apologise For Adele Speech Interruption

The BRIT Awards and it’s host ITV have publicly apologised after superstar soul singer Adele had her ‘Mastercard British Album of the Year’ acceptance speech cut short – resulting in the ‘Rolling in the Deep’ singer giving the crowd a middle finger salute.

Adele was just seconds into her speech when host James Corden was forced to walk on stage and end it prematurely, to allow Brit-pop legends Blur to start their closing set. While Adele didn’t seem to put down by the move – she’d already given an acceptance speech for her British Female Solo Artist award – Corden himself was left upset at having to be the bearer of bad news, adding that he did not understand why he was asked to cut her speech down.

Now, BRIT Award and ITV chiefs have published a statement apologising for the move, explaining that the show was simply ‘over-running’ – and that they were deeply sorry they had to ‘cut short her big moment’.

“The BRITs is a live event,” the statement began. “Unfortunately the programme was over running and we had to move on. We would like to apologise to Adele for the interruption. We regret this happened and we send our deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short this evening due to the live show over-running. We don't want this to undermine her incredible achievement in winning our night's biggest award. It tops off what's been an incredible year for her.”

Host James Corden has also come forward to press to talk about the incident, saying: “I don't understand quite why I was made to [cut her short]. I was having the best night of my life and then I had to cut Adele off before she's even had chance to say thank you. She's the biggest star in the world. I don't understand what happened but I'm upset about it. Blur played for 11 minutes and she didn't get chance to say thank you once.”

The award ceremony last night saw Adele and Ed Sheeran both walk away with two gongs – you can check out a full list of winners here.
