Led Zeppelin Reunion Gig Helps Fund £26m Graduate Scholarship

Thursday, 01 March 2012 Written by Elliott Batte

Led Zeppelin’s epic 2007 comeback show at London’s O2 Arena managed to help raise a massive £26million for a donation to the prestigious Oxford University, it has been revealed.

The show, which saw deceased drummer John Bonham’s Jason taking over on stick duty, was held in commemoration of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, with proceeds going towards helping students receive scholarships in the UK, the US and in Turkey. It’s now been revealed that Oxford University received £26million – one of the biggest donations it’s ever received.

Ertegun’s widow Mica oversaw the donation, which was taken from a multi-million pound fund which received a huge amount of cash following the gig, for which tickets cost £125. Mica said she was ‘very proud’ and added: “For Ahmet and for me, one of the great joys of life has been the study of history, music, languages, literature, art and archaeology. In these times, when there is so much strife in the world, I believe it is tremendously important to support those things that endure across time, that bind people together from every culture, and that enrich the capacity of human beings to understand one another and make the world a more humane place.”

The new programme which will be funded by the donation will help students studying literature, history, music and art history pay for their courses, beginning with an initial 15 scholarships before opening up to 35 each new year.
