Benga: 'Dubstep Can Be Bigger Than House'

London-based dubstep pioneer Benga, one third of production trio Magnetic Man, has claimed that dubstep isn’t a fad that’ll die out – and that it’s the genre of this generation.

Benga was one of the first producers, alongside Skream, to mould and establish the genre we now know as dubstep – thought a lot of the mainstream stuff you hear today is a far-cry from the deep, minimal vibes they started creating. Despite its almost instant ascendancy to the mainstream scene, though, Benga reckons that the genre will continue to grow and won’t fizzle out – suggesting that it could even get bigger than house music.

“I feel like with the people that are pushing the scene and their ambition, I feel like it is going to be as big as house if not bigger,” he told Skiddle. “It's the music of this generation and people from all over the scene are loving it – it's game over. If we want to keep things moving then we will, we really will. It's like people always say a genre is going to die if this happens or that happens, but it's not really the big names that push things forwards, it's the artists inside of it because this is what we do. It won't become a fad.”

He then went on to say something that may shock or offend any dubstep purists reading – confessing that he is a fan of Skrillex, pioneer of the genre many now know as ‘brostep’.

“Yeah I do [rate Skrillex] 100% percent, I feel like his vision and ambition was unmatchable. He achieved everything that he wanted to achieve. He just reminded us that it’s time to start dreaming again and make big things happen. I really like that guy I really do.”
