Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has claimed that he and his band would 'love' to play at the legendary Glastonbury Festival some day – and revealed that they've been trying to get their own music festival off the ground too.
The world-famous thrash metal outfit will be touring around Europe this summer, and will put on an epic headline performance at this year's Download Festival which will see them performing their seminal 'Black Album' in full. But, in the future, it's not just rock and metal festivals the band will have their eyes on – and the iconic Glastonbury festival is apparently on top of the band's to-do list.
Speaking to NME, Ulrich said: “We've never played Glastonbury. I don't know if Michael [Eavis, Glastonbury chief] would ever invite a harder rock band to play. It's something I would love to do at some point. We love playing, we love connecting with people, and you want to try to do that in as many situations as possible. Mid-May to September in Europe, it doesn't get better than that.”
The band's own festival 'Orion Music + More' will kick off this June 23rd and takes place in Bader Fields, which is near Atlantic City, New Jersey. With Metallica rounding off both nights of the event, acts such as the Arctic Monkeys, Avenged Sevenfold, Fucked Up, The Gaslight Anthem, and more all lined-up to perform.
Speaking about the festival, Ulrich said: “We're trying to get our own festival off the ground, and it's no fucking picnic. It takes five years to even really get on the map. So we're trying to get our own thing off the ground in New Jersey in June. You've got to stay with it.”
He continued: “We were invited to play Bonnaroo in 2008 and that was the first time we saw the European festival model work in America, the whole thing was a total mindfuck, it was great – it was us. The people were really accepting towards diversity, so it was back then we started thinking about doing our own thing. We really want to have that kind of European diversity and that sense of discovery.
“We've got the Arctic Monkeys, Gaslight Anthem, Modest Mouse, Avenged Sevenfold, indie bands like Best Coast and we've got one stage for a lot of younger harder rock bands, a comedy thing going on, the lifestyle element – which is a lot of James Hetfield's car show, that whole culture of crazy cars, Kirk Hammett bringing his whole horror film thing. It's going to be a pretty full fucking three days! But having your own festival, it's a pretty cool!”
