Virgin Media Blocks The Pirate Bay

Virgin Media Blocks The Pirate Bay

Following a judge's demands that British ISPs block access to file-sharing site The Pirate Bay, Virgin Media have now banned their users from getting on to he site – the first in what is expected to be a number of blockages from service providers across the country.

Mr Justice Arnold ruled in February that the site infringes copyright laws and has now called for ISPs such as Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin, O2 and Everything Everywhere to prohibit their customers from accessing the site, which is the most popular BitTorrent tracker website.

This now means that 4million Virgin Media customers are now unable to access or download files from The Pirate Bay – unless they use a proxy server. The site itself has also set some websites in an attempt to combat the bans, which will most likely anger anti-piracy campaigners further.

A spokesperson for Virign Media has revealed how they've gone about blocking the site, saying: “It is a version of what we use for the Internet Watch Foundation blocklist, called 'Web Blocker'.”
