The Beastie Boys may have been one of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time, but it's not just rapping that they're famous for, with the band initially forming as a punk band – they were even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier in the year. Amongst many others, they even inspired alternative rockers Coldplay – and Chris Martin and co. have shown their support following Adam Yauch's death by performing '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)' at a concert in California on Friday night.
Yauch, a.k.a MCA, died on Friday (May 4th) after a three year battle with cancer, and tributes and homages to the star have been flooding in – you can check out messages from Beastie Boy bandmates Ad-Rock and Mike D here.. Coldplay were possibly the quickest to respond, and put on an epic performance of the group's infamous track 'Fight for Your Right' at the Hollywood Bowl in California, which you can see embedded below.
While the performance has been seen by most as a touching show of respect to the Yauch and the Beastie Boys, there have been many controversial comments slating it – with some claiming that Yauch would have found Coldplay's twist on the song 'disgusting', and some suggesting that the move was simply a ploy by the band to recruit a new range of fans.
What do you think of the tribute? Let us know in the comment section below. If you're a Coldplay fan, you can check their up and coming tour dates below the video.
