In a news story that may not really surprise you that much, scientists have discovered that pop music of today has become a lot louder in the past 50 years - and a lot more boring.
With modern pop music receiving better mastering, better recording techniques and less creativity, experts have confirmed what most of us were probably thinking - pop in the past 50 years has gone down hill when it comes to variation and originality, with diminishing diversity in note changes and chord progression.
Joan Serra, a member of the Spanish National Research Council, told Reuters: “We found evidence of a progressive homogenisation of the musical discourse. In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations – roughly speaking chords plus melodies – has consistently diminished in the last 50 years.”
The research team also found that the ‘timbre pallet’ had also become poor, meaning that the variety of sounds in pop music has also decreased between 1955 and 2010, which is why some of us think that a lot of pop music sounds the same.
What do you think of the research? Do you prefer pop now, or do you miss the golden days? Are the findings surprising?
