Blur bassist Graham Coxon has continued the on-going mystery as to whether his iconic Britpop band will be releasing any new music in the future, saying that he hopes that ‘we carry on doing what we really want to do.’
There has been speculation surrounding the future of the band since the day they reformed in 2009, but the real question now is whether the band will continue to record and perform after they play the Olympics closing ceremony gig on August 12th, for which they’ve written two new tracks; ‘Under the Westway’ and ‘The Puritan’.
These two tracks are the only new material Blur have under their belt, but Coxon has said that while there’s nothing left for the band to put out, there’s every chance there could be something new in the future - as long as all of the band’s members are completely up for it.
“No, [there’s no more new tracks], that’s it really - sorry, but there just aren’t any more,” Coxon told Shortlist. “My only hope is that we carry on doing what we really want to do. That’s it. I don’t think we like having things pencilled in too much or feeling pressured into anything. That’s our relationship now. We record when we want to see each other and try something. There’s no point in forcing it if it doesn’t feel good.”
He went on to talk about his relationship with his bandmates, saying: “Blur are like my extended family, We have ups and downs, much like brothers do, but it’s great that we have that connection and we’re always there for each other. Our relationship seems to be more relaxed these days. The less pressure we’re under to do anything, the better we are.”
Blur perform at Hyde Park alongside New Order, The Specials, and Bombay Bicycle Club this Sunday, as part of the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony.
