Squirrel Flower, the project of Chicago-based artist Ella Williams, has laid out plans for her fourth studio album.

'Say a Prayer to the Gods of Getting Going' will arrive through Polyvinyl Record Co. on August 21, following 2023's 'Tomorrow's Fire' and last year's 'Live at Top Note Theatre'. Inspired by months of travelling across North America, it was written by the multi-instrumentalist in 2024 and 2025, and co-produced with Seth Engel, Jack Henry and Alex Farrar, whose previous credits include MJ Lenderman, Wednesday and Waxahatchee. Commenting on collaborating with Farrar, Williams said:

"He was encouraging me to lean into this ethereal, yet grounded, spacious yet textured folk music that’s so true to the early days of Squirrel Flower."

Tracked live at the makeshift studio Merry Meadow in Door County, Wisconsin, the record also features contributions from past collaborators Dave Hartley (The War on Drugs) and Seth Kauffman (Angel Olsen), plus Dimitri Giannopoulos (Horse Jumper of Love), Sofia Jensen (Free Range), Clay Frankel (Twin Peaks), Andy Krull (Red PK), and Book not Brooke (Babywave).

To celebrate the announcement, Squirrel Flower has shared the record's first single, Reelin, a warm indie-rock track that has gentle, strummed acoustic guitar running through it. Williams says, "The lyrics started as an art piece I made on an overdue Kansas Turnpike toll bill. This song is my ode to the push and pull of domesticity and unraveling. Leaving and getting reeled back in, over and over and over and over."

Squirrel Flower is currently touring the US supporting The Beths and Spoon, followed by a show in Chicago supporting Ethel Cain in August, and her first full-band headlining tour in two years across North America in the fall, featuring support on select dates by youbet, Dari Bay and Sour Widows. Head here for details.

In March, Squirrel Flower released the one-off single Wheels with Maya Bon of Babehoven and Billie Marten, which followed her 2025 cover of Mojave 3's My Life in Art with Bon.
