Superstar Robbie Williams has jokingly claimed he will break the legs of Radio 1 DJ’s if they play Madonna or Coldplay - after the station decided against playing his new single ‘Candy’ because it’s not ‘relevant’.
Radio 1 is the most current of BBC’s radio stations, and plays the latest in modern music aimed at the ages of 15-29 - which is why they’ve decided that ‘Candy’ won’t be part of their playlist, despite Williams’ massive following.
Williams, however, has been very reasonable and understanding, and has taken it on the chin - though he jokingly threatened that he’d break their legs if they were to play someone like Madonna, who he feels is as irrelevant to Radio 1 as himself.
“It’s not really about having the last laugh. Radio 1 goes through the government,” Williams told Metro. “The government’s given them a remit to appeal to 17- to 24-year-olds, obviously I don’t fit into that and that’s OK.
“Nothing’s personal, it’s not a vendetta against Robbie Williams, but they better not play Coldplay or Madonna or I’ll break their legs.”
Radio 1 explained their decision to ban Williams from their airwaves last night, telling The Sun: “Radio 1 see it not as a question of age, but of relevance. They think there are acts more appropriate to their target audience of 15-29.”
