Shinobi Ninja - Rock Hood (Album Review)

Thursday, 02 May 2013 Written by Mark Wincott

Coming straight outta Brooklyn, New York, which is part of the United States of America, we have here a record called 'Rock Hood' by a multi-talented crew Shinobi Ninja.

I came across these guys online when Ninja fans bombarded Rage Against The Machine, ordering them to have these guys as part of their support at the Free Finsbury Park gig after that infamous Christmas Number One spot for 'Killing In The Name', sadly they weren’t on the bill but I listened to 'Rock Hood' and wanted to hear more.

Shinobi Ninja were founded in 2008 with the members all working within the music industry in other capacities. This formation became this colourful circus of crazy that you can hear on their record, which works especially well with influences ranging from Metal Gods such as Metallica, to Hip Hop legends Wu Tang Clan. There is also a collaboration with the greatest of the greats such as Snoop Dogg and The Black Keys.

Here we go with 'Rock Hood'. First track 'Brooklyn to Babylon' sees vocalist Duke Sims (D.A) change his style during the track, the beat flows and its such a good listen. Followed by title-track 'Rock Hood', both tracks are a standout for me

Vocals from the multi-talented Edara Johnson AKA Baby G, who has performed with artists such as Rihanna, Pharrell and many more, appear on 'Nah Nah', while guitar solos kick in with 'Maniac Mike', which heads straight into 'Slow Mourning' with crunching guitar and some heavy drumming from Terminator Dave.

Track 8, 'Blaow', has turntable action from DJ Axis Powers, Duke Sims jumps in with some heavy vocals, while Baby G tells us all to 'Throw our hands in the air and head bang like you’re in a mosh pit', great tight tunes right there.

So much more is to come from this talented crew as we hit the track 'Brainstorm', a good old fashioned rock tune mixed with flowing lyrics, proof that they have an eclectic musical taste.

'Rock hood' gives you head-banging tracks, funky dance moves, moody head bopping, beautiful vocals, rapping, crunching guitars, ripping turntables, screaming vocals and catchy tracks.

Shinobi Ninja needs to be heard more, needs to be shared, needs to be liked on Facebook, followed on Twitter, their music needs to be bought and enjoyed, especially if you want it fun. You got it here; you got a colourful mix of 17 tracks. If you like British Bands such as Senser, or stateside bands such as RATM, House of Pain or Sugar Ray, then Shinobi Ninja’s 'Rock Hood' is for you.
