Nick Grimshaw’s Radio 1 Breakfast Show Loses Almost One Million Listeners

Thursday, 16 May 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

BBC Radio 1 host Nick Grimshaw has lost almost a million listeners, according to stats taken from the first quarter of 2013.

The quiff-sporting presenter, who currently hosts BBC Three panel show Sweat the Small Stuff, took over the highly-coveted 7-10am ‘Breakfast Show’ from Chris Moyles in September 2012 - but has managed to lose around 900,000 listeners.

The figures come via RAJAR, who have collected data from the radio station - they reported that Grimshaw’s ‘Breakfast Show’ had just 5.8million listeners in the first quarter of 2013, compared to the 6.69million who tuned in for Grimmy’s first three months. Interestingly, the average age of listeners also fell to a two year low at 33.

But, despite the fall in listeners, a BBC spokesperson has told The Guardian that this all fits in with Radio 1 chief Ben Cooper’s plans. He told the paper:

“When you put in a new schedule and target new listeners it takes time to build a new audience, both for Grimmy and the entire station. Ben has got a two-year plan for the station, and this is the second quarter of it. It is the biggest set of changes to the station in a generation. We were expecting this kind of situation. Even though the audience is slightly smaller, our focus is on the younger demographic.”
