Rolling Stone Magazine Sparks Outrage Over Boston Bomber Cover

Wednesday, 17 July 2013 Written by Jon Stickler

Rolling Stone magazine has sparked outrage among its readers today, after unveiling that the forthcoming August 3 issue will feature Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the cover. Angry fans are calling for a boycott of the magazine with many threatening to cancel their subscriptions.

The cover shot is a self-taken photograph of Tsarnaev, who is accused of killing three people and wounding more than 260, cropped and resembling the image portrayed by a rock star rather than an alleged terrorist. Some readers have even seen similarities to a previous Jim Morrison cover shot

The words 'The Bomber' accompany the photograph with the article teasing 'how a popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam, and became a monster.’

The use of Tsarnaev on the magazine's famous cover, a cover that has seen many artists strive to grace, has caused a massive backlash on social media, with Facebook taking the brunt of the tirade with over 5,000 angry comments posted.

With Rolling Stone magazine typically covered by images of rock stars and actors, many readers are calling the cover 'sick' and 'tasteless' and feel the magazine is glorifying terrorism. Comments left on the magazine's Facebook page include:

‘Very un-American. F**k you Rolling Stone. I thought it was supposed to be an honor to be on your cover?’

'Whoever subscribes to this worthless rag should cancel their subscriptions TODAY!!! This is unacceptable!!

Stars of the music world have also voiced their anger over the cover. Disturbed's David Draiman took to Facebook and his personal Twitter account tweeting:

In addition, Boston boys Dropkick Murphys have also expressed their feelings via Facebook and Twitter:

Tsarnaev is currently being held without bail in a Massachusetts federal prison. He pleaded not guilty last week to 30 counts associated with the bombing.
