Soul Singer Lester Chambers Attacked On Stage After Dedicating Track To Trayvon Martin

Wednesday, 17 July 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Soul singer Lester Chambers - frontman of the Chambers Brothers - was attacked while performing live onstage over the weekend, after dedicating a track to Trayvon Martin.

Chambers was midway through a performance of Curtis Mayfield’s ‘People Get Ready' at the Hayward-Russell City Blues Festival in California, a track he dedicated to the teenager, whose killer George Zimmerman was recently acquitted in controversial circumstances. A 43-year-old woman - identified as Dinalynn Andrews Potter - then climbed onto the stage and shoved him to the floor.

As his friends, bandmates and crewmembers rushed to stop the attack, Andrews Potter continued and allegedly shouted at the singer ‘it’s all your fault!’. One of Chambers’ friends, Kurt Kangas, told the Contra Costa Times that she had ‘a crazed look in her eye’, and that he ‘saw the devil there’. His wife Lola Chambers also commented, and told the paper:

“She must have been an acrobat. She did it in one leap. He didn't see her coming.”

Chambers was left with a bruised rib muscle and nerve damage after the assault, and is using a cane to walk. His attacker has been charged with battery, and may potentially face other charges too. Chambers’ family are pressing police to file the attack as a hate crime, as they believe it was racially-motivated.
