Fans of Californian punk-hip-hop crossover outfit Death Grips destroyed the band’s drum kit and equipment on August 2 after they failed to take the stage in Chicago.
Death Grips were scheduled to perform at Lollapalooza on Saturday (August 3), but after they failed to turn up to an ‘after party’ the night before, both appearances were cancelled.
Following their Chicago no-show, incensed crowd members began taking to the stage before eventually trashing the band’s equipment.
Bottom Lounge employees were reportedly told that the band were on their way, only to later discover that a Death Grips megamix that was playing ‘was the show’. Erin O’Neil - the Bottom Lounge’s marketing director - told DNA Info:
“It appears to us that despite having a signed contract, they never intended on performing last night and instead wanted to leave a room of disappointed fans.”
The band have also cancelled gigs in Boston and New York since, as well as a performance at Osheaga Festival over the weekend. The band’s Facebook is filled with hundreds of angry responses from fans who claim they’ve ‘lost a fan’ and are demanding they be reimbursed for their travel expenses.
Death Grips, meanwhile, have updated their status to read ‘FYF SAT AUG 24 2013 LOS ANGELES CA’ - the date of their next scheduled performance at FYF Fest.
