DJ Fresh Claims He Hasn't Sold Out - "Right Now I Want To Do Something Different"

Wednesday, 14 August 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Drum and bass star DJ Fresh has hit back at critics who claim he's sold out by taking on a more radio-friendly sound.

Fresh was once at the forefront of the underground DnB scene and produced some heavy, gritty tracks that still get played in clubs, such as 'The Nine', 'Signal', and 'Heavyweight'.

These days he's often seen performing at bigger venues and festivals, also reaching the Top 10 of the UK Charts, and working with some of music's biggest names. But Fresh, real name Daniel Stein, insists that he hasn't sold out, and that he 'really cares about that sound'.

He told Digital Spy:

"I find it a bit irritating because I did 15 years of some of the biggest tunes in drum 'n' bass. It's annoying hearing kids who have probably only been into the genre for a year telling me I've sold out. I really care about that sound, but right now I want to do something different. I feel like I'm in a place where I can make whatever sort of sound I want."

The interviewer then asked if he ever produced music with the express aim of making it onto the radio:

"Honestly, no. You hear of people trying to make pop tracks solely to get played on radio, but I think it's a very cynical way to approach music. It's mad to think that anyone does that and succeeds. The amount of tracks by underground acts that are trying to sound like 'Hot Right Now' and they've been fucking horrendous."

Meanwhile, Fresh has unveiled a behind-the-scenes video for 'Earthquake', featuring Diplo and Dominque Young Unique - you can check it out below!
