Ministry Of Sound Sues Spotify Over Playlist Issues

Wednesday, 04 September 2013 Written by Huw Baines

Ministry of Sound has sued Spotify for copyright infringement, with the case relating to playlists created on the music streaming platform.

According to a report in the Guardian, the lawsuit was filed at the UK high court on Monday and pertains to user playlists that mimic the tracklisting of Ministry of Sound's many successful compilation records.

Ministry of Sound chief executive Lohan Presencer told the newspaper:

"It's been incredibly frustrating: we think it's been very clear what we're arguing, but there has been a brick wall from Spotify. What we do is a lot more than putting playlists together: a lot of research goes into creating our compilation albums, and the intellectual property involved in that. It's not appropriate for someone to just cut and paste them."

The dispute has thrown Spotify's service into the spotlight again, shortly after Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, and the band's producer Nigel Godrich, pulled their Atoms For Peace project and Yorke's solo record in a row over remuneration for up and coming artists.
