Dave Grohl And Krist Novoselic Discuss Nirvana's Forgotten Tune

Thursday, 12 September 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Former Nirvana bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have opened up about the grunge band's recently-found Forgotten Tune, which was never released but will soon be available to buy.

The band, fronted by the gone-but-never-forgotten Kurt Cobain, are re-releasing their seminal 1993 album ‘In Utero’ on September 23, with the new reissue set to feature ‘brand new’ track Forgotten Tune.

Speaking about the long-lost track, they told NPR:

“We found it and were like, what is this song? And I don’t really remember. And [we were], like, what do you want to call it? And I’m like, I don’t want to give it a name, so let’s just call it 'Forgotten Tune' and let people make up their own minds what it is.

“But I remember the main riff in that tune was, like, from 1988 or something. Just trying to, like, bring back a riff. 'All Apologies' was from 1990, and 'Dumb' was a pre-'Nevermind' song.”

Continuing, they told listeners how the track came together:

“Pennyroyal Tea', [Dave] and Kurt were getting crazy some night down in that apartment with a multi-track cassette recorder, and 'Pennyroyal Tea' came out of that. It’s just kind of, like, there were new songs we were trying to revisit, old ideas … 'Forgotten Tune' just represents that idea. 'Let’s see if we can make something out of this.”

Nirvana’s last record before their untimely end, ‘In Utero’ has been remastered and packed full of studio recordings, b-sides, rarities, live performances and much more to be released once again later this month.

Featuring 70 tracks - including live performances from their final touring line-up (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear, and Dave Grohl) - it’s a must-have for any Nirvana fan. As part of the package, you’ll even receive the Live And Loud show they performed at Seattle's Pier 48 on December 13, 1993.

'In Utero', the 20th anniversary multi-format reissue, is set for release on September 23. You can check out the tracklisting and promo clip for the reissue below.
