AC/DC Considered Firing Bon Scott After Drug Overdose

Thursday, 31 October 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Former AC/DC bassist Mark Evans has claimed that Angus and Malcolm Young debated kicking vocalist Bon Scott out of the band after he suffered a heroin overdose in 1975.

Evans - who played with the band between 1975 and 1977 - made the claims in Jesse Fink’s new book The Youngs: The Brothers Who Built AC/DC. Quoted in the Australianhe said:

"There was a moment of madness. That's all I can put it down to. There was disquiet. I have to put this into perspective here: in any decision like that I had absolutely fuck all influence. It was just something that filtered through the band: that things weren't looking good [for Scott]. There was mention of another singer. But it never got to that point. There wasn't a lot said at the time. It was: 'There may well be a change coming.' "

Scott enjoyed another five successful years with the band before his tragic death and replacement by Brian Johnson in 1980, but Fink has put a different spin on his time in one of the most successful hard rock outfits of all time. He said:

"This is music history. It's important to know. It's an astonishing quote from Mark because finally, after close to 40 years, we've had someone who was inside the AC/DC sanctum reveal that Bon Scott was ultimately seen as just as dispensable as anyone else in the band - drummers, bass players, singers - who wasn't a Young brother. Mark has no agenda. He has no axe to grind. He absolutely loves AC/DC."
