Nirvana Joined By Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St Vincent And Lorde At Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Friday, 11 April 2014 Written by Huw Baines

Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St Vincent and Lorde joined Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear to pay tribute to Kurt Cobain during Nirvana's performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The band were inducted by REM frontman Michael Stipe, with Grohl sharing a hug with Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, and giving a shout out to Nirvana's former drummers, including Chad Channing. Jett led the band for Smells Like Teen Spirit, Gordon for Aneurysm and Clark for Lithium, with Lorde fronting a version of All Apologies.

In his speech, Stipe said (via Billboard):

"Solo artists almost have it easier than bands; bands are not easy. You find yourself in a group of people you rub each other the wrong way in exactly the right way, and you have chemistry, lighnting in a bottle, and a collective voice to help pinpoint a moment. To understand what it is that we're going through. Nirvana tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard.

"They spoke truth and a lot of people listened. They picked up the mantle of that particular battle. They were singular loud melodic and deeply original, and that voice… that voice. Kurt, we miss you. I miss you."

Also inducted during the ceremony at Brooklyn's Barclays Centre were Kiss, who did not perform following further infighting, Cat Stevens, Hall and Oates, Linda Ronstadt, Peter Gabriel, Andrew Loog Oldham, Brian Epstein and the E-Street Band, who were introduced by Bruce Springsteen.

UPDATE: Following the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame show, Nirvana turned out at Brooklyn's Saint Vitus bar for a 16-song set, where they were again joined by Jett, Clark and Gordon, in addition to J. Mascis and John McCauley of Deer Tick. Noisey have the details.
