The Beats Go On: The Stereoboard Wireless Setlist

Thursday, 03 July 2014 Written by Gavin Rees

Wireless will spread its wings this weekend, taking over Finsbury Park in London and Birmingham’s Perry Park with some huge names from the world of hip hop and R&B along for the ride.

The festival is celebrating its 10th year and with Kanye West, Rudimental and Bruno Mars set to headline, following the sad news of Drake's cancellation, they’ve landed the star wattage to make it a festival to remember. Here we take a look at the sets we’re stoked about. You should be too.

Kanye West - Friday/Saturday (London), Sunday (Birmingham)

You couldn’t miss this, could you? Fresh from the spectacular, if slightly troubled, Yeezus tour in the US, Kanye has a lot to live up to. All bets are off when it comes to this particular mercurial genius, but this is a big stage and he’s been known to deliver when the stakes are high. ‘Yeezus’ proved that he’s as creative and challenging as ever, while its industrial beats and bilious rhymes will make for a powerful backbone to his set.

Basement Jaxx - Friday (London), Sunday (Birmingham)

Reliable isn’t a word we often associate with festival high points, but that’s exactly what Basement Jaxx are. This duo have been around the block more times than we care to count and have in that time developed an arsenal of big beats and feel-good tunes that will dominate Wireless this weekend. Expect a good time.

Kwabs - Saturday (London), Friday (Birmingham)

This rising star is one who should be on your radar. Possessing a malleable voice that can slip from soulful power to quiet reflection in a moment, the Camberwell native is going to be a big deal before you know it. His recent EPs, ‘Pray For Love’ and ‘Wrong Or Right’, display his mastery of modern soul and its marriage with technology.

Earl Sweatshirt - Saturday (London), Friday (Birmingham)

You know the tale: Samoa, moving on from ‘Earl’ and ‘Doris’ really signalling the arrival of a major talent. With its downbeat production, complex beats and Earl’s laid-back but pin sharp style and observations, his second record is one to lose yourself in. This is a pretty rare chance to catch him live and solo.

OutKast - Sunday (London), Saturday (Birmingham)

The reunion tour was long-awaited and longer still in terms of its scope. This is one of over 40 shows in celebration of ‘Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik’, which sees its 20th anniversary this year. One of the most consistently interesting, not to mention fun, hip hop acts of all time, OutKast are treasures. This is real-life bucket list stuff.
