Daniel O’Reilly, the man behind Dapper Laughs, has confirmed that the character is “gone” following the cancellation of a UK tour and the axe of his On The Pull ITV2 TV show.
The comedian has faced fierce criticism in recent weeks following accusations that his Dapper Laughs material is misogynistic and condones rape. The Mirror recently revealed footage taken from a London show at which a female audience member was said to be "gagging for a rape".
A date at Cardiff University’s Students’ Union was previously pulled following a petition by students, who argued that Dapper Laughs’ act amounted to a “trivialisation of rape, unprotected sex and dehumanising of women”.
O’Reilly spoke with BBC’s Newsnight about killing the character off: "It was a type of comedy that I should not have been doing. I am not going to do what maybe other comedians would do and stand behind it and say 'if you do not like it then switch off'. I do not agree with it. It was a shame that it went so far."
