Soul Legend Ben E. King Dies Aged 76

Friday, 01 May 2015 Written by Huw Baines

Ben E. King, the soul legend behind Stand By Me, has died aged 76.

The Telegraph reports that the vocalist died of natural causes on Thursday, according to his publicist. Born in North Carolina in 1938, King moved to Harlem at a young aged and began his music career with The Five Crowns, later singing on a number of hits with The Drifters.

In 1961 he scored his first solo hit, Spanish Harlem, and followed it soon after with the song that would shape his career. Stand By Me reached the upper echelons of the US charts later that year and also enjoyed a resurgence in the mid-80s thanks to the film of the same name.
