Pity Sex - White Hot Moon (Album Review)

Wednesday, 11 May 2016 Written by Jennifer Geddes

‘White Hot Moon’, Pity Sex’s second album, explores the desire for human connection and sets it against a backdrop of the hazy days of summertime and heavy guitar feedback.

The record finds the band on familiar ground, with Brennan Greaves’ drawl intertwining with Britty Drake’s sweet, breathy vocals while guitar melodies flow in and out of waves of noise. This time around, though, they also push further into shoegaze than before, with some tracks collapsing into broken instrumental outros, mimicking the relationships they detail.

There’s something about Pity Sex's guitar fuzz that feels just like the thick, muggy nights of late summer that they are reflecting on. The album is littered with references to these months, whether it’s a plea for September to last forever, on the song of the same name, or making peace with the weeds on Dandelion.

There’s always an ulterior motive to these motifs, which not only conjure up a certain time and place but also relay emotions. We find Pity Sex at the turn of autumn, desperately clinging to the warmth as the nights draw in and things start to fall apart.

Nowhere is that more prevalent than on Plum, which stands out for its simple clarity. Backed only by a guitar melody, Drake describes the slow decay of a bowl of plums as the months pass following the death of her mother. “‘Cause my mother died in mid-June and I knew, I knew, he couldn’t look at the fruit, no, he would just let them prune,” she sings of her father’s grief. It’s the most lyrically direct song on the album, and the most emotional.

By the time we reach the end of the album, with Wappen Beggars, the band have given themselves over completely to distortion. It ends with the line “There’s a beggar inside me, watch him pout, watch him scream” before the guitars descend into an anguished, elongated electric squeal as they head into the cold winter months.
