Låpsley - I'm A Hurricane, I'm A Woman In Love (Album Review)

Thursday, 15 May 2025 Written by Jennifer Geddes

Låpsley celebrates polyamorous love on her fourth album, ‘I’m A Hurricane, I’m A Woman In Love’, exploring the period of time when the singer-songwriter was in an open relationship, and in love with two people at once.

Its first track Hurricane embraces the unstoppable force falling in love can feel like. Låpsley, real name Holly Fletcher, poetically explores doubt but ultimately chooses to ride the wave of positive emotions. “When love’s tall water falls / I trust you’ll guide us to that levy,” she sings.

Starting out at a gentle hum, it features delicate, intricate vocals, and acoustic guitar that emphasises the instrument’s tactile sound.

The song slowly builds, adding synth, big drums and twangy electric guitars that reflects the big emotions of the lyric sheet. The storm doesn’t last long, though, and it quickly drops back down to its folk-pop beginnings.

As an opener it works well to establish the album’s sound — a mix of excessive ‘80s gloss and something more homespun. Having delved deeper into electronic music on her last two releases, this album sees Låpsley embrace pop more fully on songs such as Better and Since You Left. The former is about wanting to be a better person for the one you love, the latter is about missing someone far away. Both combine Fletcher’s breathy vocals with deep, spacious electronic production.

Woman Like That is a stand out that really leans into the ‘80s sound and explores the internalised misogyny of comparing yourself to other women. “Oh shit, I’m looking through photos, sucking my tummy in, tryna do poses,” she shares. The Church also finds Fletcher exploring the failed promise of equal opportunity. “Anger grew like lichen / trust me girl / I’ve tried to fight and break it / tried to take their building down / but structurally there ain't no way to change it,” she contemplates, backed by plucked strings. It’s partnered with a spoken word track called The Vision, which adds gravitas to the song’s message.

As an artist it’s clear that Fletcher is both an accomplished vocalist and songwriter, yet even on her fourth album it still feels like she’s exploring, trying to find her sound. As such, while ‘I’m A Hurricane, I’m A Woman In Love’ plays with some interesting ideas, it feels as if it never fully commits a vision.

It duly loses momentum in its second half but Lilac Hues brings it back with an interesting sense of contemplation as Fletcher has come to a point where she’s decided she needs to choose. Her vocals shine, filled with love and sorrow, bringing both a romance and the album to a close.
