With ‘Forever is a Feeling’, Lucy Dacus examines sapphic love in all its forms, excelling in painting intimate portraits of personal experiences. The singer-songwriter’s lyrics are poetic, skillfully capturing small moments and emotions that feel universal, even if they sometimes overshadow a more muted palette than the one employed on her past work.
While it’s only hinted at in the song Best Guess, with the lyrics, “Clasping your necklace, zipping your dress, hands on your waist, kissing your neck,” Dacus has said ‘Forever is a Feeling’ reflects a period in her life where she was learning to embrace her sexual identity, recounting her relationship with her Boygenius bandmate Julien Baker.
During Big Deal, Dacus reflects on the internal conflict of concealing feelings, singing: “Everything comes up to the surface in the end / even the things we’d rather leave unspoken.” It’s a statement that could be applied in many situations and yet it also carries more significance in this context.
Limerence is delivered in a cabaret style, evoking sparkly dresses and smoke-filled rooms, as Dacus examines losing love. The song showcases her talent as a performer and writer as she moves us from an everyday scene with boys playing computer games to her internal monologue, tinged with sadness. “I’m thinking about breaking your heart someday soon and if I do / I’ll be breaking mine too,” she sings.
Ankles is more joyful, delicately capturing snapshots of intimate moments in a manner that feels almost voyeuristic. “So bite me on the shoulder, pull my hair and let me touch you where I want to,” Dacus sings, adding: “Then help me with the crossword in the mornings, you are gonna make me tea, gonna ask me how did I sleep.”
In a departure from her previous albums, which often contrasted her introspective storytelling and emotive vocals against heavy guitars, Dacus has instead chosen to swerve into more restrained territory here. The backdrop is acoustic guitar, violin and harp, connecting with the album’s romantic theme, while Bullseye is a collaboration with Hozier that uses seamlessly intertwined harmonies to light up a soulful, country-leaning ballad.
It’s fun to hear Dacus explore a variety of musical styles but on some tracks the music seems to take a backseat, coming across as a mere backdrop to the lyrics — a wash of sound that adds texture to the words without making much of an impact on the listener. But, though it may not possess the same raw edge as some of her previous releases, ‘Forever Is A Feeling’ is an expansive work that shares an experience of love that we all can relate to.
