Beastie Boys Founding Member John Berry Dies Aged 52

Friday, 20 May 2016 Written by Laura Johnson

John Berry, who was one of the founding members of Beastie Boys, has died aged 52.

Berry, who is said to have come up with the Beastie Boys name, played guitar in the band from 1981 to 1982 and appeared on their debut EP 'Polly Wog Stew'.

The original line up was also made up of Mike Diamond, Adam Yauch and Kate Schellenbach. However, by 1983 both Berry and Schellenbach had left, and were replaced by Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz).

Berry's father confirmed news of his death to Rolling Stone, who report that he died early yesterday morning in Danvers, Massachusetts following deteriorating health as a result of frontal lobe dementia.

Berry is the second of the band's original line up to pass away, following Yauch who died in May 2012, aged 47, following a battle with cancer.
