Purity Ring - Womb (Album Review)

Conjuring a nostalgic world, Purity Ring's third LP, ‘Womb’, is home to the most intimate lyrics and sounds the Canadian duo have produced to date. In the five years since Corin Roddick and Megan James landed in the upper reaches of the Billboard charts with their second record ‘Another Eternity’, they have leaned into a more layered, ethereal style, and it’s a change that suits them.

Discussing the perception of women and their power in society, along with complicated family dynamics, the honest sentiments explored on ‘Womb’ bring new depth to Purity Ring’s music. By allowing themselves to be vulnerable as artists, offering a candid window into their struggles and life experiences, they harness a more focused sense of perspective to anchor their abstract melodies.

Proceedings kick off with full force thanks to the maximalist anthem rubyinsides. In recreating tumultuous internal environments, the ebb of flow of the music feels elemental.

It’s immediately followed by the album’s most accomplished track, pink lightning, where an enormous amount of feeling is communicated by synth slivers and percussion that might disappear.

Twinkling with hope, yet distorted by a dark undercurrent, James’s voice appears warm like the sun arriving after a threatening storm. She delivers analysis of her memories with affecting insight, and together with Roddick strips away any empty gestures. As a result their life experiences drive their plethoric noise.

‘Womb’ shoves Purity Ring back to a time when they were unknowns, creating with freedom and playing around with the sounds they want to hear without the pressure of sales and chart positions. It’s liberating.
