Foy Vance has laid out plans for his seventh studio album.
'The Wake' will arrive via Rounder Records on March 13, closing a 26-year journey that began in 1999 following the unexpected death of Vance's father, a travelling preacher. The loss led Vance to commit to making seven albums, each shaped by the grief he experienced.
Since then, he has been guided by one of his father's favourite sayings: "Give me the boy until he is seven, and I will show you the man." Vance explained:
"After my dad died everything lined up and I knew I was meant to make seven records akin to those seven years, and that each record would represent a stage of my growth as an artist and a songwriter. I figured that making seven albums would be the making of me."
Produced by BRIT Award-winner Ethan Johns, the follow-up to 2021's 'Signs Of Life' will include Vance's 2025 tracks I Think I Preferred The Question, Call Me Anytime and A.I.. It'll also feature the newly shared Hi, I'm The Preacher's Son, a gentle, introspective and autobiographical track that grew from a riff he wrote on his 50th birthday.
Later this week, the Emmy Award-winning, Northern Ireland-born and Scotland-based singer-songwriter will release a 21-minute documentary called Sketches Of The Wake about the making of the album. It was filmed and edited by his long-time collaborator Babysweet (Gregg Houston).
Vance will celebrate the record's release with intimate shows in London, New York City, Los Angeles, Nashville and Belfast in March, tickets for which go on general sale at 10am local time on Friday (January 23).
He'll also play a hometown show billed as A Celebration of Life with Foy Vance at Belfast's Custom House Square on August 15 as part of the CHSq series. He'll be supported by Joshua Burnside, Vittorio Angelone, Bonnie Bishop and Jon Plunkett. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
