Legendary Abbey Road Studios Up For Sale

Cash strapped record label giants EMI have placed historic studio Abbey Road up for sale.

Regarded as one of the most legendary, famous studios in the world, Abbey Road opened its doors in 1931 by the Gramophone Company. As a result of the old-fashioned technology in place, the studio’s acoustics were refined, giving the building an unusual, un-natural warmth.

During the explosion of British pop, EMI started sending some of its hot young signings down to Abbey Road. None more famous than of course, The Beatles. Famously the fab four secluded themselves within the studio and recorded the majority of their entire back catalogue in the building. They even named their 1969 album after it.

Within just a few weeks during 1967 Abbey Road help create three masterpieces of British psychedelia. You can probably guess one of them being The Beatles’ ‘Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band’. Another was ‘SF Sorrow’ by Pretty Things, and the third was Pink Floyd’s debut album ‘Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’. All three albums were given a polish that no other studios could match. More recently Abbey Road has remained top of the list for big acts such as Oasis, Blur, Radiohead and many more have dropped by.

However, due to the current economic climate, struggling EMI are set to be re-structured by its new owners Terra Firma, and sell off the legendary studios. According to The Financial Times the studio could be sold for more than ten million pounds.

Abbey Road joins another legendary recording base Olympic Studios on the ‘For Sale’ list. Used by music icons such as Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones the London studio was put up for sale last year by EMI.
