He first came to public attention when he participated in the BBC reality show Castaway 2000, which followed a group of thirty-six people marooned on the Scottish island of Taransay for a year. This was a social experiment aimed at creating a fully self-sufficient community within a year.

From then on, he appeared more and more often on UK TV, presenting for the BBC, ITV, Channel 5, Sky, Discovery, National Geographic, hosting programmes such as Crufts, Countryfile, Extreme Dreams, Lost Worlds, Animal Park, Wild In Africa, Inside Chernobyl and more.

Also a keen adventurer, he has summited Everest, rowed across the Atlantic, completed a six-day marathon of 160 miles, multiple marathons, cycled a rickshaw from Edinburgh to London non-stop and a 3,000-mile mountain-bike race across the Rocky Mountains, plus many more challenges all in the name of charity and activism.
