The Carolina Hurricanes are an American ice hockey team based out of Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded in 1972, they form part of the NHL's Eastern Conference, and compete in the Metropolitan Division.
The Canes' most successful season is without doubt their run in 2005/06 - it saw them finish as Division Champions, go on to win their Conference Championship, and culminated in a Stanley Cup victory against the Edmonton Oilers. It was a particularly proud moment: they became the first North Carolina-based major sports team to win a major sports title. Since then, the Hurricanes have remained playoff contenders and would go far in 2008/09, but have seen their fortunes dwindle slightly.
