It seems that grunge veterans Pearl Jam are heading for a prolonged break following an announcement made by frontman Eddie Vedder at a Portuguese festival.
The NME reports that while playing a gig at Lisbon’s Optimus Alive on Sunday 11th July, Pearl Jam revealed the news to the crowd, just after starting their set, that the gig would be ‘their last’ for a long time.
Speaking in the crowd’s native language, group frontman Eddie Vedder tested his Portuguese skills and read from a sheet of paper to tell fans the news of the hiatus.
"Thank you for coming to our last show. Not our last ever, but our last in a long time."
The sudden announcement will come as a surprise to fans who have recently enjoyed the release of Pearl Jam’s latest album ‘Backspacer’. The album was released last year to some rave reviews.
Not only that, Pearl Jam recently topped the bill on the Friday night of the Hard Rock Calling festival. The group played to a huge crowd at London’s Hyde Park having been supported by US rockers Gaslight Anthem and The Hives.
In other news concerning Pearl Jam, a demo track entitled ‘Better Days’ was leaked onto the internet last month, which is said to be a track from the days of the group’s 2002 ‘Riot Act’ work.
