Open Up And End Credits - Liverpool Music Week 29/10 to 25/11

Next month sees the start of the 8th annual Liverpool Music Week – the UK’s largest indoor winter festival – and electonica features heavily in this year’s line-up.

The biggest name to be added to the line up so far is Leftfield – fresh from their headline slot at this year’s Creamfields - who will play the festival’s finale at Liverpool University on Thursday 25th November.

The British duo came to prominence in the mid-90’s when the single 'Open Up' – a collaboration with John Lydon - reached number 13 in the charts and their debut album 'Leftism' reached number three. Leftism was also nominated for that year’s Mercury Music Prize but lost out to Portishead’s debut album 'Dummy'.

Leftfield have been credited as being pioneers in the progressive house scene and were the first to fuse house music with dub and reggae. They were also one of the first electronic acts, along with The Chemical Brothers and Underworld, to feature guest vocalists and their biggest hit to date is 1997’s 'Afrika Shox', featuring legendary hip hop DJ Afrika Bambaata. That single was taken from 1999’s 'Rhythm and Stealth' album, a record that also featured UK hop hop artist Roots Manuva on the opening track 'Dusted' – which was later sampled on 'Cakes' by Kool G Rap feat. RZA – and spawned 'Phat Planet', the single probably best known for being the backing track to that Guinness ad with the surfers.

Other acts that have been announced for the festival are London-based producers Chase and Status, hip hop duo Dan le sac vs. Scroobius Pip and Beardyman. Chase and Status play the O2 Academy on Saturday 13th November, fresh from their summer support slot with the Prodigy at this year’s Warrior Festival. The duo have sampled artists as diverse as James Ingram, Black Box and Metallica and their biggest hit to date was 2009’s 'End Credits', the single that gave British rapper/singer/actor Plan B his first top ten single as a featured artist.

Dan le sac vs. Scroobius Pip will play the O2 Academy on Wednesday 3rd November whilst twice British beatboxing champion and aptly labelled improvisation sensation Beardyman will be at Liverpool University on Friday 29th October.

More acts to be announced.
