Campaign Setup to Save London’s 100 Club from Closure

Wednesday, 13 October 2010 Written by Rob Sleigh

An online campaign has been setup to raise money for the struggling 100 Club in Oxford Street. After hearing the recent news that the legendary London venue is facing the threat of closure due to financial pressure, fans of the club Tony Morrison and Jim Piddington setup a website for people to pledge money towards their campaign.

“We were fed up with people saying how awful it was that it would close and stamping their feet and waving their fists in the air,” Jim told Stereoboard. “I've been going to the 100 club for 28 years and it’s been a very important place for me and in the history of music. I love the place and I don’t want to see it go the way of all the other clubs in London.”

Despite becoming well-known as a jazz club, the venue also represented an important part of the punk scene in London during the ‘70s, hosting live performances by the likes of the Sex Pistols and the Clash. The 100 Club has also had appearances from the Rolling Stones, Oasis and, more recently, the Specials.

The campaign has already received a huge response and has also been offered the support of some big names, including Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols. The total pledges so far currently stands at £29,955. Jim added: “We started the campaign two weeks ago and, to be honest, I've been staggered at the response. It is gathering momentum all the time and getting some good coverage in the press.”
