University Launches Course To Study Lady Gaga

The University of South Carolina (USC) is offering its students the unique chance to study a course on Lady Gaga.
The module, which will feature as an optional aspect of the university’s sociology degree programme, will be named ‘Lady Gaga and the Sociology of the Fame’, focusing on the star's rise to fame and her utilisation of social networking to supporte her growing influence.
Professor Mathieu Deflem, who has elected to lead the course, is a self-confessed Gaga fan. He told the USC student newspaper, the Daily Gamecock, that the singer's rise was a “social phenomenon”: "...then I thought, 'Oh, what the hell? Let's make the whole freaking course about Lady Gaga and her rise to fame.'" he said.
"It's not the person, and it's not the music. It's more this thing out there in society that has 10 million followers on Facebook and six million on Twitter. I mean, that's a social phenomenon."
The course will supposedly focus on the role that marketing strategies and new media forms have played in the launching and maintaining of Gaga’s frenzied career. Other aspects of the controversial course include an analysis of Gay culture, religious and political themes and sexuality, amongst others. The course is set to begin in January next year.
