Shane MacGowan in Bid for Xmas Number One with The Priests

Shane MacGowan, who is to embark on a farewell tour with the Pogues next month, will also be celebrating Christmas by joining the race for this year’s festive Number One. The bid will be a collaboration with classical singers The Priests on a cover of David Bowie and Bing Crosby’s 1977 hit ‘Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy’, which is due for release on 12th December.

In 2008, The Priests, who are made up of three actual Northern Irish Catholic priests, became the fastest selling classical act in UK history with their debut album, which earned the trio a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Their third album ‘Noel’ is due for release on 6th December and follows last year’s ‘Harmony’. ‘Noel’ will include the cover of ‘Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy’.

Shane MacGowan has said of the single: “The Priests are very talented singers and the track sounds good and hopefully people like it. We changed some of the lyrics from the original and we like it the way it is.”

MacGowan was sacked from the Pogues in 1991 due to his increasingly erratic behaviour. However, he re-joined the band in 2001 for a Christmas reunion tour, which has since become an annual event. However, they recently announced that this year’s dates would be their last.

Fr Eugene O’Hagan of The Priests said: “Our sharing the song with Shane MacGowan will come as a big surprise for many fans, both ours and his. Neither of us is about to change our respective styles of music or performance, but it goes to show how music builds bridges and brings us into creative contact with unlikely partnerships. Bing and Bowie did it… now so have we.”
