With 12 million single sales to his name, Jason Derülo has already proved to be one of the most dominant chart sensations of 2010. Another huge hit looks to be on the cards as he closes the year with the release this week of his new single ‘The Sky’s The Limit’ on Beluga Heights / Warner Bros. Records.
Produced and co-written by super-producer and Beluga Heights mastermind J.R. Rotem (Rihanna, Leona Lewis), ‘The Sky’s The Limit’ blends Derülo and Rotem’s masterful ability to create a compelling pop hook with a fresh burst of familiarity courtesy of an element borrowed from the classic track ‘Flashdance… What A Feeling.’
Jason Derülo’s self-titled debut album provides the thrilling sense of the arrival of a major new star. As well as ‘The Sky’s The Limit’, it contains another four hits: the Billboard #1 debut ‘Whatcha Say’ that sold 4.5 million copies, his first UK #1 single ‘In My Head’, the enduringly popular ‘Ridin’ Solo’ that peaked at #2 and the recent single ‘What If’. In total, 1.3 million of his single sales have occurred in the UK.
“It’s definitely a music lover’s album,” he says. “It reflects all my different influences, but it’s deeply rooted in pop. My vision for the album was to make music that would impact the world. And by that I mean that music is a healing thing. When you play your favourite song, you can forget all your troubles for three minutes. I want to provide those getaway moments for people.”
Raised in a two-parent home in Florida, Derülo took to performing in school plays, and composed his first song on piano at the age of eight. He kept writing, and at seventeen, Jason wrote and sang the chorus to ‘Bossy’, a song on southern rapper Baby's album ‘Five*Stunna’. This opened the floodgates, as he became a sought-after songwriter for the likes of P. Diddy, Lil Wayne, Sean Kingston, Cassie, Donnie Klang, Birdman, Iyaz and Danity Kane.
Having recently played his sold-out debut UK headline shows as well as sets at the 2010 V Festival, Jason will return next year to play a full tour that culminates with a London show at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo and two sold out shows at Manchester O2 Apollo.
