Rihanna And Christina Aguilera Investigated By Ofcom After Sunday’s X Factor Performances

Thursday, 16 December 2010 Written by James Conlon

Pop superstars Rihanna and Christina Aguilera are suffering a public backlash after performing risqué routines on last Sunday’s X Factor final. More than 2000 people are said to have complained to the independent TV regulator Ofcom about both singers' routines on the show.

Both artists appeared in skimpy outfits in the series final, which was won by singer Matt Cardle on Sunday. The show, which broadcasts from 7pm (two hours before the British watershed) had an average audience of just over 14 million. Speaking about the complaints, a spokesperson from the show said producers were confident that the performances "were appropriate for the show".

However Ofcom appear to be dragging their heels on the matter, as a spokesperson for the regulator said that they still have not decided whether the incident will warrant a formal investigation, or indeed if the show had even broken the broadcasting code. A spokesman said: "Ofcom judges every single viewer complaint. Given that we’ve received over 2,000 complaints this process takes time to complete."

The delayed decision has been treated with complaints from both the public and members of Parliament. Earlier this week Labour MP Denis MacShane said: "If Ofcom wants to keep the confidence of the public then it has to respect the clear public desire for a full investigation into the way The X Factor is drifting towards a double-X show. Ofcom are part of the cover-up establishment that will find excuses to delay and when the report comes out nobody will be interested in it."
