Veteran rockers Bon Jovi have ended the year as the world’s highest-grossing concert attraction, it has been revealed. According to a trade publication, the band earned more from concert ticket sales than any other artist in 2010.
The New Jersey band sold $201.1 million worth of concert tickets over the year, split almost evenly between North American sales and sales in the rest of the world. The achievement is all the more impressive when acknowledging that the bands 2009 release, ‘The Circle’ had a relatively mediocre sales record, while their Greatest Hits CD wasn’t released until late October last year.
The figures were calculated by trade website Pollstar, which also revealed that ticket sales declined overall in an economy which suffered over the year. Pollstar stated that the top 50 worldwide tours dropped 12% of their revenue, reaching $2.93 billion, while the top 50 North American tours also dropped 15% to $1.69 billion. However, the article highlighted the importance of overseas tours, which are becoming more lucrative for artists because of changing political climates. Sales across Asia and the former Soviet bloc are becoming more pivotal for major touring artists, it was revealed.
Australian rock band AC/DC earned the Number Two spot, grossing $177 million in 2010, while U2 came in at Number Three after having grossed $160.0 million over the year.
Pop overlord Lady Gaga was the highest-earning non-rock act, earning $133.6 million in concert sales over 2010. The ‘Bad Romance’ star was also revealed to be the hardest-working act in the top 50, performing 138 shows worldwide over the year. By contrast, Bon Jovi only played 80 shows, while U2 performed just 32 over the year.
The top ten highest-grossing acts of 2010:
1. Bon Jovi
2. AC/DC
3. U2
4. Lady Gaga
5. Metallica
6. Michael Buble
7. ‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ Live Show
8. Paul McCartney
9. The Eagles
10. Roger Waters
