X Factor winner Matt Cardle has earned his third successive week at the top of the UK Singles Chart, keeping away competition with his hit song, ‘When We Collide’.
The singer has retained the top position with his pop version of Biffy Clyro’s ‘Many of Horror’. Despite an initial backlash from fans of the Scottish rockers, it would appear that the majority of the British public look far more favourably on Cardle’s string-heavy version of the track.
The single, which also features several live tracks from the X Factor live shows, has now sold over 815,000 copies since its release, making it the second biggest selling song of 2010, falling just behind Eminem and Rihanna’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’, which sold 854,000 copies last year.
The singer held off Rihanna, who once again earned the Number Two spot with ‘What’s My Name’, while both Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding re-entered the top ten during an exceptional week for the top 40 chart, which saw no new entries at all.
In terms of albums, Rihanna did what many believed to be impossible, knocking Take That off of the top spot. The R&B star earned the Number One spot for the first time with her fifth studio album, ‘Loud’. The singer had been kept back by Take That for six consecutive weeks with their hugely successful ‘Progress’.
Meanwhile, the albums chart was full of surprises as Plan B and Tinie Tempah both managed to re-enter the top ten. London folk band Mumford & Sons topped off an impressive year by climbing a massive thirty places to claim the Number Six spot.
